Drafters’ Corner: New Draft Tier List!

Hi everyone! Many people have been asking me for this, and so here it is! The updated Draft Tier List to include all the Dusk Road cards is available here:

New Rating System!

With a new set, it’s also time to change to a new and improved rating system! I’ve adapted LSV’s rating scale to better suit the eternal cards and it is as follows:

5.0: Premium bomb, card that consistently dominates the game and is hard to answer. (Thunderstrike Dragons, Accelerated Evolution)
4.5: Bomb, card that usually dominates the game if unanswered. (Mystic Ascendant, Rolant’s Honor Guard, Memory Dredger)
4.0: High impact card that often generate strong value or tempo. (Annihilate, Cobalt Monument, Ageless Mentor)
3.5: Premium playable that pulls you into a color. (Awakened Student, Minotaur Lighthoof, Morningstar)
3.0: Good playable that basically always makes the cut. (Stormcrasher, Rebel Sharpshooter, Striped Araktodon)
2.5: Solid playable that rarely gets cut. (Stalwart Shield, Awakened Sentinel, Blinkwolf)
2.0: Good filler, but sometimes gets cut. (Static Bolt, Refresh, Dormant Sentinel)
1.5: Filler. Gets cut about half the time. (Safe Return, Skeeter, Snapping Brushstalker)
1.0: Bad filler. Gets cut most of the time. (Amaran Camel, Amber Ring, Plifer)
0.5: Very low-end playables and sideboard material. (Civic Peacekeeper, Corrupt, Centaur Outrider)
0.0: Completely unplayable. (A New Tomorrow, Mating Call, Forgotten Find)

The main reason for the improved scale though, is the following!

Multiple Contributors!

One of the features of the new draft tier list that I’m most excited about is that I managed to persuade/convince/swindle 4 other top-tier drafters (Isomorphic, Mouche, Mann_Und_Mouse and SirRhino) to rate the cards as well! These guys are all frequent names on the top 100 leaderboard, and it’s not rare to see them hold the no. 1 draft position as well. So when they say something about a card, I would think twice before doubting them!

The Overall tab features the rating a card received averaged across all 5 of us. If you are interested in the specific rating each drafter gave a card, you can check that out in Summary tab. Unsurprisingly, there is a high degree of consistency of ratings across drafters for most cards. I’ve underlined the cards that have very high variance in rating.

I have also created individual rating sheets by each contributor as separate tabs in the same document, so if there is a drafter who you trust more, you can just go to his tab to view his rating sheet. The numbers behind each drafter’s name indicates which sets he has rated (so Isomorphic and I have rated all the sets, while the other 3 only rated set 3 cards). Mouche also went the extra mile and rated the cards separately with and without synergy, so do check that out here!

A Word of Caution

There is a serious warning that I want to tag onto this tier list though. With the synergistic nature of the new keywords and tribal effects, the variance in a card’s rating is extremely high. As you build your deck, the rating of cards will fluctuate wildly depending on your deck thus far. As such, you often need to consider synergy and payoff while picking cards, rather than simply following the tier list to a T. This is a very hard skill to acquire and even now, I’m often torn between some picks. If you have any trouble, do check out #draft on the eternal discord and there are often helpful people hanging out!

May your chosen factions always be open,
