Hot Takes For Filthy Netdeckers II and Brewer’s Challenge V

Hello Friends!

A new adventure is upon us! A lot of people are really hyped about this, and for good reason. I am not doing a full review of the cards in the adventure as I will be doing that in my podcast, but we have some brewing to attend to! When Set 2 dropped people were really happy to get rough versions of decks early, so I decided to run that back. The first half of this article is all about my initial draft of “ToHT” inspired decks. Next, I am launching into Brewer’s Challenge V! Be sure to cast your votes!

Lifeforce Midrange

2 Sanctuary Priest (Set1 #73)
2 Seek Power (Set1 #408)
2 Annihilate (Set1 #269)
4 Temple Scribe (Set1 #502)
4 Vara’s Favor (Set0 #35)
2 Xenan Initiation (Set2 #44)
4 Ayan, the Abductor (Set2 #204)
4 Banish (Set2 #207)
4 Dawnwalker (Set1 #86)
1 Cruciation (Set1002 #20)
1 Deathstrike (Set1 #290)
4 Devoted Theurge (Set1002 #6)
4 Katra, the Devoted (Set2 #208)
4 Sandstorm Titan (Set1 #99)
4 Beckoning Lumen (Set2 #59)
2 Waystone Infuser (Set2 #63)
2 Slimespitter Slug (Set2 #167)
8 Time Sigil (Set1 #63)
5 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249)
4 Seat of Mystery (Set0 #61)
4 Xenan Banner (Set2 #201)
4 Diplomatic Seal (Set1 #425)

Do you feel the urge to Theurge? I basically took SirRhino’s Lifeforce Midrange deck and cut a couple cards to make room for Theurge, so if you are familiar with that deck, this pretty much that. Still, I think Theurge is a great addition and will round out the deck! Being able to cut a couple of Sanctuary Priests is nice, since that card is not very good (though I also shaved a couple Slugs, but don’t tell Rhino). I am also starting 1 Cruciation to give it a chance, although I am skeptical.

Aggro Minotaurs

2 Brash Shorthorn (Set2 #137)
4 Finest Hour (Set1 #130)
2 Jack’s Knife (Set2 #139)
2 Minotaur Oathkeeper (Set2 #70)
4 Argenport Instigator (Set1 #268)
4 Auric Bully (Set2 #232)
3 Vara’s Favor (Set0 #35)
4 Auric Interrogator (Set1002 #13)
3 Auric Sentry (Set1 #146)
2 Bloodletter (Set2 #235)
4 Slay (Set2 #236)
2 Auric Runehammer (Set1 #166)
2 Hammer of Might (Set1 #170)
1 Lethrai Falchion (Set1 #285)
3 Minotaur Lighthoof (Set2 #163)
4 Relentless Gorehorn (Set2 #160)
1 Crownwatch Press-Gang (Set2 #92)
3 Tavrod, Auric Broker (Set1002 #18)
9 Justice Sigil (Set1 #126)
8 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249)
4 Argenport Banner (Set2 #231)
4 Seat of Vengeance (Set0 #55)

Auric Interrogator made this tribe interesting, but Tavrod really brought the heat. This card is so good I don’t really think you need to play it in a minotaurs deck, but lets just start here. The exact mix of weapons you want is hard to guess, so I erred on the side of just trying everything. Revenge is particularly good with Tavrod as you will get to just throw the units onto the battlefield as you attack, which is insane with Relentless Gorehorn. I played this deck during a good deal of that campaign, and there is very clearly some power here.

Skycrag Midrange

4 Permafrost (Set1 #193)
4 Torch (Set1 #8)
2 Kaleb’s Choice (Set2 #188)
4 Kaleb’s Favor (Set0 #3)
4 Second Sight (Set1 #207)
2 Whispering Wind (Set1 #202)
2 Polymorph (Set1 #211)
4 Tundra Explorer (Set1 #204)
4 Vadius, Clan Father (Set2 #191)
4 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)
4 Crimson Firemaw (Set1002 #3)
4 Torgov, Icecap Trader (Set2 #126)
4 Obliterate (Set1 #48)
2 Pearlescent Drake (Set2 #127)
2 Swindle (Set2 #129)
7 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
10 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
4 Seat of Fury (Set0 #53)
4 Skycrag Banner (Set2 #186)

I have two Skycrag decks in this article, and this is by far the more conservative. Firemaw is totally insane, and I probably don’t need to tell you this, but it is going to see a lot of play in a lot of decks. This is one that was not a thing before, but it could be a possibility now. I feel like there is some kind of “spells matters” midrange deck just lurking below the surface waiting to come together, but we haven’t been able to figure it out yet. Here is a rough draft of that deck.

Skycrag Eilyn

Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 4.31.45 PM.png

4 Trail Stories (Set1 #188)
4 Permafrost (Set1 #193)
4 Torch (Set1 #8)
2 Kaleb’s Choice (Set2 #188)
4 Whispering Wind (Set1 #202)
4 Kindle (Set1002 #2)
4 Wisdom of the Elders (Set1 #218)
4 Rebel Illuminator (Set1 #43)
4 Jotun Hurler (Set1 #227)
4 Obliterate (Set1 #48)
4 West-Wind Herald (Set1 #231)
4 Channel the Tempest (Set1 #244)
4 Eilyn, Queen of the Wilds (Set1 #245)
6 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)
11 Primal Sigil (Set1 #187)
4 Seat of Fury (Set0 #53)
4 Skycrag Banner (Set2 #186)

Yeah, I can’t stop myself. Kindle into West-Wind Herald Attack into Kindle into nonsense just seems like too much fun. There is a lot to figure out here (how few Primal spells can I get away with?) but hopefully someone can crack Eilyn Combo so that we can live in a world where everyone is trying to ritual out Channels at one another. What a lovely world that would be!

Brewer’s Challenge V

Since the beginning of the month lines up with the release of “Tale of Horus Traver” I decided that this edition of the challenge would only use cards from the new adventure! If you don’t know what the Brewer’s Challenge is, check out these previous articles! The Strawpoll can be found here.

My goodness…. I have no idea if this card is good, but it looks like a blast! It seems like it does something in mono-primal deck? I really have no clue, but the ceiling looks powerful enough that I am willing to give it a chance because it looks so whacky. This is very much in the category of card that I am willing to aggressively give up on if it is just terrible. I don’t quite understand how a Yetipult draws cards, but I suppose Yeti engineering is just too advanced for me.

This card is a little easier to evaluate. Basically everyone was saying Tavrod was busted the day he came out, and I can really see it. One of the most realistic “hot take” decks leaned heavily on this majestic beast. Want to see me take it to master?

This card is either busted or terrible, and I am going to figure out which! There is a lot of potential here, such as whacky Eilyn combo nonsense, or Bad News combo. It could all be bad, but there is really only one way to find out. Another card I might have to bail on if I can’t get it to work.

Midrange Xenan Lifeforce is a deck SirRhino has been playing for a while, and he is excited about adding this card to that deck, and I am too! I really do feel Lifeforce as a deck is inches away from being top tier competitive. My initial take on the deck is in the earlier section, but there is still more potential to explore!

Is it possible to assemble Exodia? Is it even worth it if it is? I’m not sure, but I am interested to find out! I suspect this is not as bad as some suspect, but let’s give her a shot!

One day you people will force me to play a Strangers deck. Maybe with the stress on them in the campaign it will finally be the time. This card advantage engine is really really neat, but really narrow and fragile. I really hope Strangers is a new meta deck, but I am suspicious.

That’s it for me! Be sure to vote here! Hope you all have as much fun with the campaign as I did!
